Hey,
I just wanted to thank you for the instructions you've posted here. I'd been fighting with getting Omnet++ installed on Debian and the relevant portion of your instructions worked perfectly for me. I don't really have anything useful to add, just to say that your post made me happy :)

Great post Drew! I was just trying to install OmNET on a virtual machine running Ubuntu and I found this very helpful. My exact error was

"configure: error: Cannot build Tcl/Tk apps, probably due to misconfigured or missing X11 headers or libs. Check config.log for more info! "

I was missing some libraries which I was able to solve by looking at this site: http://oswinds.csd.auth.gr/~cdnsim/tutorials/tut1/install/CDNsim_installation_guide.pdf.

Synopsis: If your ./configure returns errors about Tcl/Tk libraries, run these commands:

sudo apt-get install tk8.4-dev
sudo apt-get install tcl8.4-dev

Any other library errors, run these:

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install libboost-dev
sudo apt-get install python-wxgtk2.6
sudo apt-get install flex
sudo apt-get install bison
sudo apt-get install doxygen
sudo apt-get install xsltproc
sudo apt-get install graphviz-dev
sudo apt-get install giftrans
sudo apt-get install blt-dev
sudo apt-get install libxml-dev
sudo apt-get install expat-dev
sudo apt-get install mpi
